My take on this little beauty

OK so this item is great but not perfect and here's whyCons1. No BBC iplayer, as per the previous comment this was one of my main requirements for purchasing this box. Please ignore LG or your retailer's advice, there is no access to iplayer on this item. Sure, there is access to Youtube, Lovefilm & Google Maps but no BBC iplayer (Look in the Premium Apps section).2. It's very easy to accidentally stop a recording, you are not always prompted with a message, something like "are you sure you wish to stop this recording" would be great. I will caveat that this may be 'user error' as I had started watching a blu-ray in between recordings.3. Once a recording is complete a message appears, something like "would you like to switch of the device". You then have about 3 seconds to react or the box simply switches off!! You cannot switch off this feature or adjust it. This is particularly annoying if you are recording a programme and watching another channel.Pros1. Very simple user-interface (even the in-laws can work it!)2. One button press for recording's list3. Remote works with my Sony TV (KDL 40W550) so only one remote for TV, Freeview, Media, Blu-ray & DVD4. Looks pretty goodConclusionIf it had BBC iplayer I would keep it, however because of this fatal flaw I will be taking it back, possibly for the Samsung, I would go for the Panasonic equivalent but they seem to have shot themselves in the foot by not including built-in wi-fi (and I'm spending £65 on a wi-fi dongle).So to sum up there are 3 models available that have twin HD tuners, a hard drive & Smart TV:-LG HR925M - Pretty good but no BBC iplayerSamsung BD E8300 - Latest firmware has fixed all the bugs and has iplayer so I'll probably get this nextPanasonic DMR PWT7420EB - Very good but no built in wi-fiGuess I'll have to go for the Samsung, right?

Let down by annoying software

This is not quite bad enough to be sent back in disgrace, but I do regret the purchase. Aside from the "No iplayer at the moment" problem, the software is simply not up to scratch. Basic operations are fine, and fairly intuitive, but I expect better usability than this for a modern consumer product.For instance, it has dual tuners so you can watch one channel whilst recording another, but if you are watching one channel and a scheduled recording starts, the channel you are viewing is either changed to the one you are recording, or you can select "No" and cancel the recording. This is made even more annoying by the fact that there is no "previous channel" button on the remote.A similar really frustrating "feature" is the auto-shut down on timer record completion. Rather than being able to set this on a per-programme basis - i.e. record this film after I've gone to bed and then switch off, it prompts you at the end of every recording, and the default is to shut down. So if you are watching another channel, and can't find the remote within 3 seconds the box turns off (and it takes about 30secs to switch back on again).We spent about 5 minutes last night trying to work out how to delete a recording we had just finished watching - it turns out you can't delete something whilst recording something else. Rather than greying out the menu option, with perhaps a helpful message if you try and select it, the "Delete" menu item simply disappears, only to reappear again when there is nothing recording.There are many of similarly irritating quirks - they will perhaps be improved with subsequent software patches if enough people complain about it, but we shouldn't have to test their products for them.

App' are a big let down

The reason I purchased this machine was to go with my LG 3D TV which it works with seamlessly so the machine is general very good i.e. Good Blu-Ray, Good HD recording good Wi-Fi connection but LG do need to get there App store up to speed as it is a big let down for the British consumer if your looking for a player that will connect you to on line content, unfortunately a lot of the app’s are not required but the ones that are like I-player & ITV player are not available, which is a big disappointment.
