5.1 on the cheap

I also own the X540 which is the predecessor of this system so it was good to compare new with old.I have recently done a garage conversion and the room is being used as a TV/Cinema room. I purchased these speakers to connect directly to my Panasonic BD80 using the analogue audio out connections on the player. With the correct leads this provides `true` 5.1 audio for the room.I also connect the other aux stereo input to the audio out of my tv via phono connectors. These speaker use a propriety `3d sound` process which gives very good simulated surround sound on this input. This is comparable with the X540 `matrix` mode but cannot be switched off however. Not really a problem though as it is really very good.I have connected to the TV the following: HD DVD player, Sky HD, , PS2, Wii, and as mentioned a Panasonic Blu-ray player. The reason I am providing all this detail is to let you know you can have a good sound system in your room for around the 80 quid mark when wired up in this manner. In this respect these speakers fit the bill perfectly.Soundwise they are fine , with nice high end and plenty of bass (adjustable via knob on sub). Power wise they are also adequate for an average size room, definitely loud enough to annoy neighbours.I also extended the cables for the rear speakers easily by cutting the cable and adding a longer length to both.I would say they are a step up from the X540 due to the additional stereo input which gives far more flexibility. Soundwise there is not much to choose between them.I would recommend these to someone on a tight budget and as they are made by Logitech they should last a good while.

This is for all the people who were like me thinking "To Buy or Not to buy". And worried about some of the negative comments on the speakers.One of the negative comments that came up a couple of times was humming/crackling sound on the speakers - the only reason this happens is because they either have the tv/ipod sound turned up too high against the speakers volume. Which would also happen on the most expensive speakers! To avoid this you just need to get the sound/volume balance right between the two devices.Another negative I read was sound quality from a couple of people who then recommended some more powerful speaker at 2/3 times the price of these. I agree that if you love your high sound performance and love blasting your music for a small festival of 500+ People then these speakers are not for you. However if you are like me and want some very good decent surround sound while playing your xbox, watching movies and playing COD in your own living room then you will be very happy with these speakers. The sound quality and base are great and is deffinately loud enough to entertain visitors, friends and annoy the neighbours! Great value for money.The set up is very easy and to get the surround sound all working through your xbox and tv you just need the correct leads which comes with the xbox which you connect to the speakers then get a hdmi cable to connect your xbox to the tv and its ready to go. If you are not very electronically minded there are lots of good videos online to show you how to connect the leads.I was a bit worried at buying these speakers at first but I am SO Happy that I took the chance and bought them. I am Very Happy - Great sound and value for money.Hope this helps.....

I bought these after purchasing a very dodgy set of Creative Inspire T6160 for my PS3. I very quickly realised I'd been miss informed about this products compatibilty and performance in relation to games console. So after some extensive research on the internet I came across the Logitech Z506 speakers. After reading a lot of comments from your usual 'Audiophials'saying how you just couldnt get 5.1 3D sound from anything under £250, I put it to them to buy a set of these and hook them to a console through an analogue cable and hear the results for themselves. I was Truly amazed! I set them up with a little trepidation after my previous experience but I need'nt of worried.I tested them with the game SKYRIM first, WOW! The drums playing on the start up screen were immense, I actualy felt the 'whoomph' of air come from the sound tube on the subwoofer, delivering a deep throaty bass tone. So I started up the game, and it wasnt to long before I was in the heat of battle, and yes it does produce a 3D effect with excellent results, most noticeably when I had an arrow fired from the front of me and missing falling somewhere behind me, the sound passed from the front speakers to the rear, giving the impression of passing over my head ( this also happened with a dragon passing over me from behind to front). When In conversation, the sound is clear and cuts the background noise out ( this is also a good way to test the 3D sound, just face to hear the sound in front, turn 180' to hear it behind you and left and right to hear the sound move to the left and right speakers), it really does work. I'm very sure that a lot better speaker systems exist out there, ones that do 'true' surrond sound and dolby and the like but if like me, you have a little cosy games room where the girlfriend banishs you to when eastenders is on and you want a decent immersive sound experience to go with your game playing, this system is for you. It also works brilliantly with films, I tried it with 'lord of the rings' on blu ray and skipped straight to the Balrog scene and it sounded awesome! You can even attach a three way splitter and use the colour coded sound card cables to run you iPod or iPhone with them, another very useful feature. The build quality is second to none, the highlight being the Wal-ee Esk centre speaker which has a clever fold out arm that means you can sit it on top of your tv/monitor. Only down sides were the volume controls are on the front right speaker, and the bass dial is on the rear of the subwoofer meaning it can be fiddly adjusting things but this is only a very minor flaw. All I can say is buy with confidence, you wont be dissappointed.
