3A very basic and scaled down starter model
By Trevor Willsmer
This is basically a compact and somewhat stripped down version of the popular Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray Player from a few years ago, albeit reduced in size and capabilities. The BDPS370 was a hugely popular entry level player because of its low price, and this lowers the price even further. Unfortunately in the intervening years it still retains many of the same problems.Very much a basic model with few frills, picture quality is very good but not quite premium Blu Ray quality, it's for the most part a quiet machine, though some discs can prove noisier than others (a problem with DVD players as well), and the loading time generally isn't too bad, though this varies from disc to disc (as does the memory function). Functions are fairly limited - there's no `go to' function, with only a basic running time feature that doesn't display time remaining on the whole disc or individual chapters. While this was fairly discreet on earlier models, on the BDPS1100 it masks off even more of the top and bottom of the picture with a black border larger than even the widest of widescreen pictures. There's no programming feature if you want to watch chapters out of order, no zoom function, no `clear' button, and the shuttle function isn't as smooth or precise as it could be, either going too far back or forward or not far enough, which can be particularly irritating if you're trying to catch a missed line of dialogue. It tends to skip the first second or two of picture and the first three or four seconds of sound at the start of any program, so you often find yourself having to skip back to catch the odd line. It's also, unsurprisingly, region locked both for Blu Ray and DVD, though you can play region free NTSC DVDs on it. The DVD functions are a bit more problematic. Aside the multi-region limitations, it can also be a bit problematic on reading aspect ratio, stretching some widescreen titles a little too much and forcing you to spend some time adjusting the image size. However, the picture quality upscaling on DVDs is good enough for you not to feel the need to start replacing every title in your collection. The biggest flaw, however, is the design of the remote control, which rather stupidly places the `home' key so close to the `down' menu navigation that you'll find yourself inadvertently turning off the player and having to wait for it to reload yet again on more occasions than you'd like. It's infuriatingly user-unfriendly. The new design isn't ideal either, taking up less width than its predecessors but with a slightly convex top that isn't ideal if you want to stack an internet router on it for its Ethernet connection. Even more unwelcome is the loss of audio outputs on this model - just HDMI and Ethernet connections, which is a problem if you haven't updated your amps in years. If you don't want all the bells and whistles and don't want to spend a few hundred pounds on a top of the range model until prices get more reasonable, it's a perfectly decent player - just don't expect too much from it.

4Small, Quartz Design, New YouTube App, Pair Device, But No Wi-Fi
By Alan
Out of the five Blu-ray Disc players that Sony currently sell, the BDP-S1100 is their cheapest, entry-level model. It comes neatly packaged in a slim (33 x 7.1 x 27.4 cm) green box that contains the following six items, but no HDMI or Ethernet cables:- Sony BDP-S1100 Blu-ray Disc/DVD player (black)- AC Power Cord (UK plug, inconveniently hard-wired into the back of the BDP-S1100)- Remote Control (RMT-B119P, black, 42 buttons, short at 14.9 cm)- Sony AA Batteries (two of them, silver)- Operating Instructions (34 pages)- European Guarantee Information DocumentThe BDP-S1100 itself is surprisingly small compared to most other Blu-ray players, measuring just 29 x 4.3 x 19.9 cm. It's "Made in Malaysia", extremely light at just 1064 g (including the AC Power Cord), and it feels and sounds rather hollow when handled. It has a glossy (fingerprint magnet) black plastic finish on the front panel and part of the top, and a matte black metal finish on the remainder of the top and the two sides. Whereas most Blu-ray players are simple cuboid shapes, the BDP-S1100 features unusual angles and non-parallel lines, as part of Sony's new "Sense of Quartz" design language. It certainly looks great, but the faceted top surface (split up into two trapezoids and two triangles) could prove impractical if you're planning on resting/stacking anything on top of it.On the front of the BDP-S1100 there isn't a single button, just a Disc tray (tray-loading mechanism), a Remote sensor and one USB port (Type A, 5V 500mA). However, on the top of the BDP-S1100 are four pyramid shaped buttons (open/close, play, stop, and power on/standby). These buttons aren't the pretentious soft-touch type that I've grown to hate, but traditional mechanical buttons that make a satisfying click when pressed. On the back of the BDP-S1100 are three ports: LAN (100), HDMI Out, and Digital Out Coaxial (compatible with PCM, DTS, and Dolby Digital audio formats). There is no Digital Out Optical port.Just like the Sony BDPS185B.CEK SMART internet enabled Blu-ray Player (Old model) that I reviewed in November 2011, the BDP-S1100 doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi. That's right, no Wi-Fi. So the only way of connecting it to the internet is via an Ethernet cable plugged into the LAN (100) port on the back. As an experiment, I tried plugging my Sony UWABR100 USB Network Adapter Bringing Wireless Internet Access to Your Wi-Fi Ready TV into the USB port on the front of the BDP-S1100, but got a message saying "the USB device connected to this unit is not supported". So, that's my biggest complaint with the BDP-S1100, the fact that it can never be wireless. This was clearly a strategic decision by Sony, to make you consider spending more on a model that DOES have built-in Wi-Fi. More on that later.Turning the BDP-S1100 on for the first time, you're faced with three Easy Initial Settings screens (OSD Language, Quick Start Mode, Finish). You then arrive at the home menu, which uses Sony's Easy System Menu interface; an evolution of the XrossMediaBar graphical user interface first used on the PSX (PlayStation X) in 2003. Initially the home menu is rather bare looking, with five categories to choose from (Setup, Photo, Music, Video, Network). If you haven't connected an Ethernet cable yet, four of these categories (Photo, Music, Video, Network) will list nothing but a message saying "Internet Video. Select to refresh Internet content", which isn't very useful. So what I'd recommend doing is plugging in an Ethernet cable, going to Setup on the home menu, and running Network Update, which will upgrade the software version from the old M14.R.0040 to the new M14.R.0138 (via a 104.31 MB download). This update adds two additional categories to the home menu, which now has seven categories, each containing multiple items:- Setup (9 items)- Photo (1 item)- Music (5 items)- Video (37 items, including 34 services)- Network (3 items)- Sony Entertainment Network (4 items)- Recommendations (5 items)Even though the BDP-S1100 is sold as a Blu-ray Disc/DVD player, you might actually find yourself using it more for the online services it can connect to. So here's a full list of the 34 services available in the Video category which, oddly enough, you won't find in the Operating Instructions or on Sony's website:- Video Unlimited- BBC iPlayer- Demand 5- Sky News- LOVEFiLM- Netflix- MUBI- Qello HD Concerts- YuppTV- SONY ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION- Free Hollywood Movies & TV Series- MUZU.TV- euronews- GREEN.TV- YouTube- Billabong- AOL HD content delivered to your TV- Break.com- blinkx- Wired- Indaba Music- Epicurious.com- Concierge.com- Style.com- Dailymotion- uStudio- GolfLink.com- LIVESTRONG.COM- eHow.com- LOVEFiLM (again, for some reason)- SingingFool- Podcasts- Tagesschau- DWAdmittedly, the majority of these services (or apps) are useless, with no actual content worth watching. However, the BBC iPlayer and YouTube apps are extremely good, and more sophisticated than you may have seen on other devices. The BBC iPlayer app found on the BDP-S1100 is the brand new BigScreen version 3.5.21. The interface is beautifully designed and contains seven menu items (Featured, Most Popular, Favourites, Categories, Channels, Search, Last Played). And when you're playing a programme, there are five options available (Back, HD On/Off, Subtitles On/Off, Add Favourite, Info). The YouTube app, known as "New YouTube for TV", is even more impressive. It has a modern Google-designed interface, far superior to the one on the Apple TV, and boasts a huge number of menu items and features including:- Recommended Videos for You- My Uploads- My Watch History- My Activity- My Watch Later videos- Search- Sign In & Settings- What to Watch- My Subscriptions- My Favourites- YouTube Trends- Music- Gaming- Sport- Film & Animation- Entertainment- Comedy- News & Politics- People & Blogs- Science & Technology- Howto & Style- Education- Pets & Animals- Most PopularWhat I really love about this new YouTube app is, it doesn't stop at the end of each video, it keeps playing. So, if you're watching your Subscriptions (for example), it automatically proceeds through them, playing them in date added order, without you having to touch the remote. This is fantastic because it means you can finally sit back and be entertained, without keep having to press buttons and interact, as you do with the Apple TV. I should also mention that this new YouTube app has a Pair Device feature, which enables you to use your mobile device (phone or tablet) to find videos and then play them on your TV (via the BDP-S1100). It's similar to AirPlay, but doesn't depend on any Apple iOS devices. Now, given that the BDP-S1100 is a Blu-ray Disc/DVD player, what's the picture quality like when playing Blu-ray discs? Well, I tested it with Despicable Me (Blu-ray) and couldn't fault it. There were no weird artefacts or issues; everything looked just as sharp and vibrant as on the Sony BDPS790 3D SMART Blu-ray Player with Built-in Wi-Fi, which is almost three times the price! So what about Blu-ray 3D discs? Can the BDP-S1100 play those too? Unfortunately not. I tried to play Thor (Blu-ray 3D), but hit a wall when the following message came up: "This Blu-ray 3D discs requires a compatible 3D HDTV & Blu-ray 3D player or a Blu-ray player that has been upgraded with the necessary firmware to allow 3D film playback. 2D playback is not available via this disc."Overall, I think the Sony BDP-S1100 is a great product. It's small, it's got a striking Quartz design, it's got excellent versions of the BBC iPlayer and YouTube apps, and it's extremely good value for money, when you consider all the things it can do. My only complaints are the practicality of the faceted top surface, the old-fashioned remote control, and most importantly the lack of built-in Wi-Fi. So my advice is, if you have a Wi-Fi network in your home, get the next model up, the Sony BDPS3100 Smart Wi-Fi Blu-ray Disc Player, which DOES have built-in Wi-Fi.

Very user friendly, well designed blu ray player. Fast to boot up and navigate around. Network features are great, no wifi but in my experience its rarely fast enough to support such features. Has co axial audio output. Like it a lot!
