No problems here on Windows 7, firmware update was simple,

No problems here, and I didn't seem to have the firmware troubles others had. I just entered the drive name and "firmware" into Google, got straight to [...] at the bottom of which is "SmartPack - Firmware Auto Upgade Program for Optical Storage Products" which says "This program supports all Lite-On's Optical Drives".From unboxing to watching blu-ray disks via software install and firmware update was about 15 minutes max. Can't fault it so far.

LiteOn or LG?

So the drive itself seems to work fine & does what you'd expect, but when I came to install the software for it an error message popped up & informed me that the software was only for use with LG drives, I contacted Amazon & they pointed me in the right direction to get support from LiteOn with the problem, & so far I've had no response from them in nearly 3 weeks.So, thumbs up to Amazons customer support, but thumbs down for LiteOns.

First off, this is a read only (ROM) drive, so it reads CD's, DVD's and Blu ray discs. It is not a writer, so no CD, DVD or Blu ray writing with this one, hence the cheap price.It arrived really quickly (I am a prime member) and as I ordered two, but separately and they both arrived together so pleased with that. If you are a computer tech type, very easy to fit. You need a spare SATA power connector on your PC's power supply and you will also need a sata cable for attaching the drive to the motherboard - you must have a spare SATA connector on the motherboard. The drives are OEM (Original Equiment Manufacture) so no screws or SATA cable is supplied. The drives are not short so be aware of it fitting it in your case - it will fit in most cases, but some of the cases used by a premanufactured PC will lack the space.Once fitted comes the important bit, the software. You need this to watch blu rays and in some cases DVD's on your PC. Windows, Mac OSX and linux/BSD do not come with any blu ray playing facility (Blu ray CODECS) so you must have 3rd party software to play a blu ray. In this case my operating systems are Microsoft Windows, I use the others but won't go into it here as it is very complicated and the software supplied with the drives works on Windows only. There are minmum requirements for the supplied software which is Cyberlink's PowerDVD 10. Here are the specs:-I. It is not everyones preference (some buy other software such as TMT, WinDVD etc), but it is supplied free with the drive. Once you have installed PowerDVD, it is vital you update it. Go to the Cyberlink website and download the free update for PowerDVD 10. DO NOT upgrade as that will cost you.I installed this software on Windows 7 and Windows 8, it works on both. I tested it with some finicky blu rays (some are difficult for some reason due to encryption software to copyright protect the film/show etc) and they played well.So overall, if you are good with PC's it's simple to fit, the software is good which really does the job, it works on Windows 8 as well and it is very good value.
