4Quality and Flexible Twin HD TV recorder
By Thinker
Overall very pleased with this. We have it linked to our Samsung TV, AV Receiver and home network with no problems at all.In summary my main thoughts are:Pros - Twin HD freeview recording, Pause/rewind Live TV, remembering playback positions of any part watched programmes, Editing of recordings (create more disk space too!), Good build quality, Clear Manual/remote, Wireless, DNLA Server and Client, quick/easy setup and simple to use, BluRay player in same box, clear menus and display on front, clear icons and grouping of series, clarity of picture and sound.Cons - EPG `DIGA' logo ¼ of screen wasted (can see more information by flicking to `landscape' view though), little slow to scroll through e.g. channels, HD recordings not able to view elsewhere on network, limited appeal of the internet access (shame no iPlayer etc catch up TV - we have this on the TV already though). One of the main reasons I like this machine is the DNLA Server ability. This works fantastically on all PC's/laptops (Win 7 and XP) both wired and wireless, as well as our Samsung TV's on the network. It's great to be able to watch a recording anywhere in the house. Now we have this we `couldn't' do without it!The addition of a Bluray player and Wireless make this a great all-in-one box that saves space and minimises clutter of cables. To conclude this is a feature laden quality box, that is easy to use, but can be made to do a lot more than simply record and playback HD TV and watch Blurays. A larger hard disk and improvement to the layout of the EPG are the only real criticisms. But it does what it says in the blurb and does it very well!

4Good multifunction PVR and BlueRay
By Nick Flynn
The problem with all multi-function machines is that they never really are as good as separate PVR or BlueRay players. We will use this as a secondary machine in the bedroom where space is tighter and needs are not so great.First of all, the spec, HD, twin tuners, Freeview ... all great stuff ... Blue Ray as well in the same box, and by today's standards, a modest 320Gb hard drive recorder ... that is enough for about 80 hours worth of programming ... and wifi internet connection with DNLA access ... so on paper it is all you need (assuming your recording requirements are on the modest side).Pros first ... very easy to set up, attractive black box and all in all it took 2 minutes to hook all the cables in and get into set up mode and scan for channels. There were some basic security stuff that you can enter as well as pass-codes (in case it is recovered by police ... at least they will know where it came from). The internet connection was also a breeze, and it will service 802.11n plus is backwardly compatible with g as well.So within minutes I was up and running and clicking into the TV Guide to check out the interface ... it is not the best ... so much of the guide screen is wasted with 2 large grey boxes that say DIGA that appear to do nothing ... that space could have been used to show program information ... Having said that, the Guide switch toggles to show programs by time ... or by channel ... very useful. You can also show programs by category ... movie, documentary, entertainment, drama, etc which is pretty good.Selecting a program to view, record or series record is also easy and intuitive, and it will inform you if there is an HD alternative. One thing you don't get is the continuation of the sound of the program you are watching ... so best to leave any searching or programming for the adverts.Playback of recorded programs is also easy and clear, and I like the fact that the picture in picture image will start to play if you pause for a few seconds ... nice touch.I was pretty excited when I saw the unit had build in wifi and internet capability, but the content is very poor indeed. No iPlayer ... or ITV/Channel 4 content ... most of what is there I have no interest in ... for example, even the weather content is limited, the nearest place to me was 50 miles away.I did register for DivX, which was a bit of a faff, and to be honest, I doubt I will use it.Skype is available if you pay £120 for a camera unit, I think not ... and twitter too ... again, I registered, it was easy enough, but I think I will stick to my iPad.It did connect very easily into my DNLA server, and I picked up both music and photos with ease ... (I don't have any movies on my NAS drive so cannot comment on how they would load)I also tried out the USB and SD connections, both my wife and I have cameras that use SD cards, so it is nice and easy to use, (better than wires into the back of the TV)I have left the BlueRay side of things until last as there is not a lot to say. It works, the picture quality is excellent, and operation is whisper quiet. In summary, whilst 4 stars is a bit generous, if your needs (esp in terms of capacity) is modest, or if you want something that is easy to set up ... for a spare room/bedroom then this is a good option. It is pricey, but the all important picture quality and noise in operation is very good.If you seriously want to use it to view internet content ... want to record a lot of stuff (series record can eat up capacity) ... not so good, adequate to poor even ... and as for the user interface ... back to the drawing board I think.

3Feature rich, but surprisingly lacking
By Philip
On paper this BD player and PVR appears to do pretty much everything, so I'll go through each feature and try to show where it succeeds, and where it fails.PVR - My everyday PVR is a Virgin Media TiVO, which is currently by far the best PVR money can buy. This Panasonic then, has a lot to live up to. First impressions are extremely negative, as the programme guide is absolutely terrible. Despite running in 720p widescreen, it uses only a relatively small part of the screen, filling the rest with empty space, tool tips, and a giant grey box which serves absolutely no purpose. This leaves little room to see the guide making finding things rather tedious. It's also very, very ugly.It does however support something called FreeView+, which allows series links to be set, split programmes to be seamlessly recorded, programmes running late to end on time, and recordings to be set with the green button when a trailer is being shown. The PVR will also give you recommendations for some programmes, which while vastly more simplistic than TiVo, is still a nice touch. HD recordings are offered when you set a recording for something in SD when an HD version is available. There are two HD Freeview tuners in this box, meaning you can record two shows at once, or record one while watching live TV.BD playback - There's not much to say here other than BDs played fine and looked incredible as they always do. There's no menu buttons on the remote though, so you have to access that functionality through a pop up menu on the 'option' button. BD Live is also supported.Wi-Fi - Wi-Fi is built in and it supports 802.11n as well as older standards. It found my 5ghz and 2.4ghz networks (running on an Apple Airport Extreme) It however refused to connect to my 5ghz network. When I connected it to my 2.4ghz network, it recommended I use 5ghz instead.Streaming - We all rely on various streaming services these days, and this device has something Panasonic call Vierra Cast. I'll list some common services which you may want to use, and whether Vierra Cast supports them, or not. - BBC iPlayer --- No - 4 On Demand --- No - Demand 5 --- No - ITV Net Player --- No - LoveFilm --- No - Sky Go --- No - Spotify --- No - Last FM --- No - YouTube --- Yes - Flickr --- No - Picassa --- Yes - Skype --- Yes (but a Panasonic web-cam is required)Pretty poor selection then. There is a movie streaming service called Ace Trax which offers movies for £3.50 in standard definition only. The user interface on this service is possibly the ugliest I've ever seen.DNLA - Streaming from DNLA servers is also supported. I have a server set-up using Twonky Media at home which I used to test this. I had limited success with this. On the audio front it will play MP3s, but not AACs, so any music from iTunes won't play. Photos in JPG format worked fine, but I didn't try any other formats. On the video side of things it failed to play MKV (despite claiming to do so), XVID, and MP4. I could get it to play re-muxed MKV (H.264/AAC or AC3) video in an MPG enclosure, which is how the PS3 likes such files. These can be easily created using free tools such as MKV2VOB.External Connectivity - This device also has a USB port and an SD card slot, both of which worked fine when connecting to my Sony point and shoot.3D - I don't have a 3D HDTV, so I wasn't able to test this.Overall - This device looks like it ticks all the boxes, but the combination of a truly awful user interface and dreadful streaming options make this a difficult device to recommend.
