5So Far So Excellent - Part 2
By Travel-Buddy
Ordered this item from Amazon on Tuesday morning 6th Dec 2011 and it was delivered mid-day Wednesday 7th Dec 2011, so well done Amazon for the excellent turn around. Out the box the unit was all in order and to expectation. It was easily connected to the TV (Sony 40" 3D LED) via HDMI and to the AV amp (Yamaha) via a digital coaxial. Tested a 2D DVD and the picture and 5.1 sound were amazing. Next plugged in a USB memory stick (4gb) and via the menu selection proceeded to play .WMA music files, the sound was equally impressive. Next plugged in another USB memory stick (4 GB) containing photos (.jpg) and was able to invoke / play a slideshow, once again impressive images. Finally, plugged in a Verbatim 1tb external USB HDD, which had been formatted using Windows 7 to the NTFS file system and contained home movies (.divx files) created out of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack and then converted to .divx by Divx Plus Converter. Again screen display was very impressive. Overall the unit appears solid and well constructed, but I can see why other reviewers have indicated their disappointment with the "soft feel" of the remote control buttons. Never-the-less it adequately performs the job. Will follow up with Part 2 of the review once I have set-up Wi-Fi, used NetTV and Blu ray etc.Have now completed part 2 of set-up and encountered only 1 problem when setting-up wi-fi, accessing NetTV and playing a Blu-ray disc and more DVD discs. The problem as expected is with the remote keypad, in so far that 1 of the keys (i.e. additional options during playback) only works 2 out of 20 attempts. I contacted Amazon UK and they are willing to replace the whole purchase or allow a 15% discount to allow me to purchase an alternative R/C. However according to Philips UK and their associate spares company (Dutchwest)only the R/C model RC-2802 at a cost of £27.99 + £3.99 delivery, will work with the BDP5200/05 player.I will now explore alternatives before considering returning the whole thing back to Amazon UK. Pity as everything else, except the remote control is brilliant about this player so overall would give it 4 stars.

1Philips BDP5200/05 3D Blu-ray disc and DVD player with USB and WiFi
By C. Taggart
Like others I was swayed by the reviews (Which etc.) as I wouldn't have considered buying a Phililps product. I also really wanted the built-in wifi facility to watch YouTube/internet. While it plays discs well and the wifi sometimes works well, I have come to hate this product with a passion. Sometimes the remote seems to work, sometimes not. Sometimes discs play and rewind and eject with the remote but usually not. It always goes into the disc playing mode even if I want to use the USB or internet TV mode so I have to wait for that to do its thing. It doesn't have a great memory of where the last viewed place of a movie was and I usually have to start from scratch if I take a break. YouTube is infuriating and there's no point registering an account as the favourites option doesn't work anyway. The remote/player constantly freeze when in internet mode and the navigation is torture. I recently registered the product and got an update. I hoped there would be an improvement but things got worse. Now YouTube starts with the same stupid video at a deafening volume of some virtual football game and an advert that ends with 'cheesy nipples' - not something I want my kids to hear when they just want to watch Big Buck Bunny or clips of Jack Sparrow. Trying to navigate is agony and seriously all those comments about the remote being useless are spot on - it's dire. It plays some of my videos (from a Sony A35) but not from my previous two Nikons. I can't really say it's faulty - it's just useless. If you like added aggravation in your life then buy this product. I'd love to drop-kick it through the window and buy something else - maybe some day.

5Excellent
By R. J. Beynon
THis is a smart box, the usual lightweight offering, but is a little wider. The remote is fine, although seems to demand a harder and positive press than one might expect - not a big deal if you cna use the iphone/ipad wireless controller, which works quite well. Connected to the TV (HDMI) and internet (cable) took seconds. The start up sequence is straightforward and the disk player just works fine. The system auto-set up found the router without issues, and acquired an IP and NS address without any hassle. I haven't tried the wireless option but it is there, in the box, if yuo need to do that.NetTVThis seems quite useful, if you don't have an internet capable TV (I don't). It requires registration with Philips (no big deal) but it does require you to enter an email address using the remote - awful! However, I plugged an old Dell keyboard into the USB port, and it worked really well (apart form a small regional issue, easily dealt with). I had no idea if this would work, but 'who dares wins'iPlayerAs delivered with firmare 1.0, one of the six top level menu icons is iPlayer, but this doesn't actually work! I then updated the firmware to 1.35 (using the USB option, not the net, as the latter declined to find me an update!). USB updating was simple and took just a couple of minutes. After that, the iPlayer top level icon was gone, but there was an icon under NetTV (the philips option for on-line viewing/listening).So- with firmware 1.35, and registered, I load iPlayer - perfect!Nice integration so it is easy to jump to full screen viewing (compared to the pain of doing this on a PS3). Play and Pause, fast forward, for example all work in iPlaye too. THis might be the best way to watch iPlayer on a TV system yet.The NetTV includes a YouTube option which also works well - nothing like a HD TV to show how awful most YouTube video and sound is! But, god enough to watch the VW Superbowl ad one more time (boy=Darth Vader, mind controlling dad's car)For me, this seems fine. I'd recommended having a keyboard to hand for things like registration or youtube or iPlayer searching. Expect to spend a little time fiddling on set up, but after that, it seems to tick all the boxes.Untested: wireless, 3D playback, BD playback.
